"After taking primary season criticism over the number of women in its upper ranks, the campaign of Barack Obama has significantly ramped up its hiring of women in senior staff positions. The move appeared aimed, in part, at reversing what one top aide said was a 'bit of a bad rap' for running a male-dominated campaign organization. Prominent women activists said that, through the primary season, they had taken note of a gender imbalance in the campaign’s top echelon, particularly when compared to that of Hillary Rodham Clinton's operation, but were pleased to see the presumptive Democratic nominee hiring more women." "'It's going to be before Obama, B.B., and after Obama— A.B.—and some folks need to get used to this,' director Spike Lee told Reuters at the Silverdocs film festival outside Washington, D.C., last night. 'And I'm going to be at the inauguration—getting my hotel reservation now.' Mr. Lee is predicting that not only will Barack Obama take the White House, but the nation will be a decidedly different place under his leadership. 'It's not an if ... he changes the world. He changes how the world looks at the United States,' he said. 'It's going to be a new day. Not just a new day, a better day.'" (Observer)

"THE society wedding of the summer is today when Paul Desmarais III, grandson of billionaire Canadian financier Paul Desmarais, ties the knot with Mary Dailey Pattee, daughter of former Merrill Lynch honcho Gordon Pattee. Some 350 guests from around the globe will watch the lovebirds wed at St. Thomas on Fifth Avenue, then head to the reception at the New York Public Library. The parents have hired top wedding planner Elizabeth Allen, who did the nuptials of Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor." (PageSixxies)
