Bond Influence Salon: "Capturing The Friedmans"

(image via flavorwire)

Last night I attended a salon thrown by Bond Influence on the subject of new evidence coming to light in the Friedman case. Among the crowd were filmmaker Andrew Jarecki and lawyer Ron Kuby. Since "Capturing the Friedman's" won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance in 2003, the Friedman case still hangs, unresolved. The film, profoundly even-handed in its delivery, persues the elusive truth as to whether or not the Friedmans actually molested children at their computer school in Great Neck. A 45-minute evidence reel was presented last night and it was quite convincing -- at least to this viewer -- that there was serious evidence of investigative misconduct in the way the detectives questioned the children, as well as in the preconceived notions of the sentencing judge who has said in interviews since that she never doubted the guilt of the Friedmans. For a night -- one optimistic, chilly New York night -- Kuby and Jarecki showed the gathered never-before-seen video, robustly pushing the case in a Q-and-A panel afterwards for overturning Jesse's conviction.

Years later and several more testimonies recanted, it seems almost as if inertia has set in concerning the possibility of overturning of Jesse Friedman's conviction. Don't tell that to Ron Kuby or Andrew Jarecki, however.  Arnold Friedman, unfortunately, died in prison in 1995 (which makes this story all the more tragic if indeed this was all hysteria on the part of the Great Neck police and community).
